  \nTerrestrial reference systems and their realizations are fundamental
  requisits for measuring the surface structure\, the rotation and gravity
  field of the Earth\, along with their variations in time. Terrestrial
  reference frames provide the basis for many practical applications\, such
  as national and regional networks\, engineering\, precise navigation\,
  geoinformation systems as well as for scientific investigations in the
  Earth's system and for monitoring of Global Change phenomena. The
  realizations are computed from a combination of solutions derived from
  space geodetic observation techniques (VLBI\, SLR\, GPS\, DORIS)\, which
  have made and enormous progress in precison and accuracy in the last
  years. However\, to fully exploit the high potential of these
  observations\, the underlying reference frames must be realized with
  highest accuracy\, consistency and stability over decades (e.g.\, for a
  reliable and sustainable estimation of global sea level change).\n\nThis
  presentation gives an overview about the basic concepts and the
  procedures for the realization of terrestrial reference systems. It
  briefly summarizes the historical developments and presents results of
  the latest realization\, the International Terrestrial Reference Frame
  2008 (ITRF2008). The current status is discussed and illustrated by
  results of the latest computations. Finally\, future challenges and  new
  developments are presented.  \n \n\n\n
